A Message from the CEO
Over the last year, we have been building a variety of relationships with organizations that help to enhance our Girl Scout experience and grow our mission through participation in a variety of programs.
Kicking off in October, we will once again partner with Goodwill Industries for our yearly service project, Good Turn for Goodwill. From October 1 through the end of the year, girls and troops are encouraged to collect bags of gently used clothing, household items and even most electronics and donate to their local Goodwill facility. Through their donations, girls are supporting Goodwill’s employment and training programs, helping to impact the future of residents right in their communities.
Another new venture we are excited to launch this fall is our partnership and patch program with the non-profit campaign #HATNOTHATE. This campaign launched in 2018 encourages kindness through creativity. The signature of the organization is the blue hat, which is made and distributed to youth across the country as a way to empower those who wear them to show kindness, as well as represent awareness, peace and solidarity in who they are. Our council is hosting our own Stitch for Kindness maker event in support of the #HATNOTHATE partnership on Saturday, October 7. We hope several of you will come out to support this important mission. And don’t forget, we are looking for girl designs for the new patch that will be part of the patch program!
An additional great community outreach initiative happening in the coming months will be the support of our local first responders in conjunction with the 2024 Girl Scout Cookie Program. Cookies for a Cause, the cookie program service project that began last year, will be collecting packages of cookies for our local paramedics, firefighters, police officers- anyone who works as a first responder. We can’t wait to share some Girl Scout love and cookies with these important heroes!
We hope you are excited about these additional opportunities and will take advantage of these ways we can show kindness, support and gratitude to our neighbors around us.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15-October 15, it’s a time to honor the history of Hispanic culture and the traditions they cherish most. How are you celebrating with your Girl Scouts? Did you know you can earn the Hispanic Heritage Month fun patch? You can find the official activities here and learn more on our blog.
Girl Scout Day at Grandfather Mountain
Girl Scout Day at Grandfather Mountain is this Saturday! All Girl Scouts and troop leaders get in free (family members also get in with a reduced rate), and you don’t have to have advanced reservations to take part in the day’s activities!
Programs begin at 10 a.m. and you can find the full schedule here.
We hope you’ll especially make plans to join us for the Bear Investiture Ceremony happening at 3:15 p.m. that day. All five of the Grandfather Mountain female bears will be made honorary Girl Scouts!
Tips for your making your day enjoyable:
- Please carpool if able. Grandfather Mountain is also open to the public on Girl Scout Day and parking may be limited.
- Dress for mountain weather: wind, rain, cold temperatures. It can be 10+ degrees cooler than at your home base. Bring waterproof, windproof jackets, sneakers/athletic closed-toe shoes.
- Bring a reusable water bottle. There are two water bottle refill stations, located in the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery lobby and the Top Shop first floor.
- Pack your own lunch and use your picnic areas to avoid waiting in line at Mildred’s Grill. Lines can get very long around lunchtime, especially on busy Saturdays in the fall.
