Health is the New Wealth: Misa Brumby’s Girl Scout Gold Award Project

Misa Brumby of Girl Scout Troop 13053 in Guilford County has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award for a community health initiative that aimed at reducing adolescent and teen obesity through education, exercise, and stress management.

Recognizing the growing health challenges facing youth, the Girl Scout Ambassador partnered with Thrive with Coach Candice for her Gold Award project, ‘Health is the New Wealth’ to create a YouTube channel featuring videos on nutritious meals, physical activity routines and healthy lifestyle habits.

“I discovered a passion for empowering others, and I gained confidence in using my voice to make a difference,” said Brumby, a Girl Scout of 11 years. “I now feel more prepared for future leadership roles and more committed to promoting health equity.”

In addition to her video series, she led a wellness patch program for a local Junior troop, teaching girls in fourth and fifth grade and organized a community “Walk in the Park” event, which promoted physical activity and collected donations for the YWCA.

Girls in high school can earn the Girl Scout Gold Award by creating sustainable change on a community or world issue. They address the root cause of a problem, plan and implement innovative solutions to drive change and lead a team of people to success. Each Girl Scout must dedicate a minimum of 80 hours to planning and carrying out their project that benefits the community and has a long-lasting impact.

Gold Award Girl Scouts gain tangible skills and prove they are the leaders our community and world need, and those from the Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P) council have created community gardens, addressed issues in foster care, combated bullying in schools and so much more.

“My Gold Award project, ‘Health is the New Wealth’, has deeply impacted me by revealing my own strength, creativity and ability to lead,” said the Gold Award Girl Scout. “I learned that I’m more resilient than I thought.”

Thousands of Girl Scouts across the country earn the Girl Scout Gold Award each year, which first began in 1916 as the Golden Eaglet. Earning the Gold Award opens doors to scholarships, preferred admission tracks for college and amazing career opportunities. In 2024, 40 GSCP2P Girl Scouts earned their Gold Award.
