2023 Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend

It’s time to get outside at your favorite state park! The 2023 Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend is September 9-10, and once again, parks from across our state are offering fun ways for girls and their families to explore their resources and enjoy the outdoors.

You can find the list of activities going on that weekend below- from self-guided tours, family hikes, canoeing and special outdoor crafts, we hope you will celebrate this weekend with us! You can also download the GSUSA passport activity sheet on their website to add to your fun and unlock the patch!


Girl Scouts Love State Parks: South Mountain State Park
Saturday, September 9
9 a.m.- Noon

You are invited to join park staff for a fun morning of activities celebrating the Year of the Trail. Girl Scouts will have a chance to paddle a canoe on the lake, make animal tracks and run through our Ranger Relays. All equipment and supplies will be provided.



Girl Scouts Love State Parks: Lake Norman State Park
Saturday, September 9
10-11 a.m.

Lake Norman State Park will be hosting a Make Your Own Track ID guide event. This program will help Girl Scouts identify tracks of local animals they may find in the park, as well learn a few fun facts about our native critters. After you make your guide, feel free to check try it out on the Alder Trail to look for some tracks!



Girl Scouts Love State Parks: Haw River State Park
Saturday, September 9
10 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.

Haw River State Park will be hosting a special trail event focusing on Art in Nature. Activities will be sensory-based and concentrate on observing nature’s natural patterns and designs. Participants will make and design art, enjoy nature photography and learn how nature effects our health. The program will support the Outdoor Art Creator, Outdoor Art Apprentice, Outdoor Art Explorer and Senses badges.



Girl Scouts Love State Parks: Crowders Mountain State Park
Saturday, September 9
10 a.m.- Noon

Crowders Mountain State Park will be hosting a guided hike from the Boulders Access to the Boulders Overlook for Girl Scouts and their families! A ranger will lead the hike and teach girls identification skills along the way (plants, bird calls and anything else we see!). The hike is approximately two miles round-trip.



Girl Scouts Love State Parks: Mount Jefferson State Natural Area
Saturday, September 9
10 a.m.- Noon

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area will be hosting a guided hike! We will be discussing the natural resources seen at Mount Jefferson State Natural Area and the changing colors of leaves and how nature responds to colder weather. Participants will also make a fall themed craft at the end of the hike at the picnic shelter. 



Girl Scouts Love State Parks: Haw River State Park
Saturday, September 9
2-4 p.m.

Haw River State Park will be hosting a Junior Ranger Discovery Hike from the Iron Ore Belt Access. We will hike to the Beaver Pond and complete Junior Ranger activities along the way. Girl Scouts will earn their park patch at the end of the program. The trail length is an easy-grade two-mile hike and the program is designed for children ages 5-12, but all are welcome to join!
