More Than Cookies: Life Lessons from the Girl Scout Cookie Program by Media Girl Ava

Hi! My name is Ava, I have been a Girl Scout for over nine years. As a Girl Scout, one of the most rewarding opportunities I participate in is the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Not only do I sell cookies, but I develop real life skills, grow as a leader and contribute to my community. 

Essential life skills: 

One of the largest reasons I engage in the cookie program is because it educates me on several important life skills that will reward me later in life, long after my time in Girl Scouts. 

The program is based on 5 key skills:  

  1. Goal setting: Before cookie season, I always create a goal of how many cookies I strive to sell. This helps me stay focused and inspired. 
  1. Decision making: This teaches me to make smart choices by encouraging me to promote my sales and help my troop decide on how to spend the money or donate our earnings. 
  1. Money management: This teaches me financial responsibility by handling cash, digital payments, giving correct change and keeping track of all my profits. 
  1. People skills: I personally have always struggled with communicating with others, but Girl Scouts has helped me greatly improve by talking to customers and making sales pitches. 
  1. Business ethics: This teaches me to practice honesty, fairness and responsibility in sales, fundraising and leadership, guaranteeing respect, accountability and a positive community impact. 

Another reason I love the Girl Scout Cookie Program is that it helps fund my Girl Scout adventures. The money I receive goes towards my troop so we can go on fun educational trips like camping, museum tours and out of state trips!  

So remember, every box of Girl Scout Cookies is more than just a treat. It’s a contribution to our future Girl Scouts. I look forward to continuing to be a part of some of the amazing things Girl Scouts will achieve in the coming years.
