Today’s Tips 10.12.20

Here is everything you need to know that’s happening in P2P this week…

Congratulations to Kennedy Jeffers- a 2020 National Gold Award Girl Scout

GSCP2P is honored to announce that Kennedy Jeffers of Greensboro and Service Unit 147 was chosen as a National Gold Award Girl Scout for 2020. Every year, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) gives this recognition to 10 girls from across the nation. You can read more about Kennedy and her project here

Kennedy was featured in the Girls Change the World event, along with the other nine National Gold Award Girl Scouts, that was hosted by GSUSA over the weekend. Almost 10,000 Girl Scouts tuned in as these girls talked about their projects ranging from key issues like healthcare access and education, food insecurity, campus sexual assault, distracted driving and menstrual equity.

This year, National Gold Award Girl Scout nominations underwent a rigorous multi-round review process, with finalist applications reviewed by a panel of previous National Gold Award Girl Scouts, leaders from a range of professional fields, GSUSA staff, Girl Scouts’ national volunteer partners and representatives from the Kappa Delta Foundation and Arconic Foundation. The 2020 National Gold Award Girl Scouts will receive a combined $100,000 in college scholarships from Susan Bulkeley Butler, founder of a women’s leadership development organization and a former member of the Girl Scouts of the USA Board of Directors. The Kappa Delta Foundation and Arconic Foundation also each generously contributed $50,000 in college scholarships.

Kennedy is the daughter of Rodney Jeffers and Diedre Hobbs of Greensboro and was a member of Girl Scout Troop 40503 before graduating from high school last year. She is currently attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Gluten-Free Caramel Chocolate Chip Cookies: Pre-Order Now
Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont Girl Scout troops will have the opportunity to sell gluten-free Caramel Chocolate Chip Cookies as part of the 2021 cookie program.

Because these cookies are not baked with the regular ABC cookie lineup, they are available to the council on a pre-order basis only. If your troop would like the opportunity to sell them, have a guarantee that you will receive a certain number of cases and have them delivered with your initial cookie order, click here to place an order by the close of business (COB) on October 23, 2020.

The council will order a limited quantity of extra cases that will be available on a first come, first serve basis for pickup at our council service center cookie cupboards beginning January 11, 2021.

Registration Open for the National Council Session
G.I.R.L. 2020 was supposed to be happening in Orlando, Florida this year, but just because the big, in-person event had to be cancelled does not mean that you can’t still participate! All registered Girl Scouts are invited to attend the first-ever virtual National Council Session happening October 23-25. You can register for as many sessions as you want. Click here for a detailed agenda and registration information can be found here . Registration closes October 18.
Prudential Spirit of Community Award- Apply Today!
Applications are now open for the 2021 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national youth volunteer awards program sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Over the past 25 years, this prestigious program has recognized more than 140,000 middle and high school students at the local, state and national level – including thousands of Girl Scouts.

Girls, in grades 5-12, who have recently earned their Girl Scout Silver or Gold Awards would be particularly good candidates. Top youth volunteers at the middle and high school level are eligible to earn $1,000 scholarships and an invitation to a special recognition event.

Qualifying girls must:
Be in grades 5-12 as of November 10, 2020
Have participated in a volunteer activity, at least in part, after September 1, 2019
Complete and submit an online application by November 10, 2020

After November 10, applications will be reviewed and we will select one or more Girl Scouts to represent our council at the state-level judging. We hope you will encourage the girls in your troop to apply!

New Ways to Volunteer!
GSCP2P is creating new ways to volunteer with us and we need your help! Over the next few weeks, we will be sending out a short survey to our volunteers and parents of currently registered girls to gather information as we develop this new volunteer program. We hope you will consider sharing your opinion with us.
