P2P Intern Spotlight

Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont has been excited to have Kayla Kessel with us this summer as an intern in our Troop Experience department. Kayla is a senior at UNC-Asheville, graduating in December with a major in Psychology and a minor in Neuroscience. Her future plans include getting a PhD in Counseling Psychology and doing research in neuroscience. She is officially from Long Island, but her current hometown is Marvin, N.C.

Kayla was a Girl Scout from Brownies to Ambassadors and served as PA at day camps in the area. Her favorite Girl Scout memory is climbing the Phoenix Tower at camp and just when she thought she could only make it half way up the rope ladder, “my troop cheered me on and encouraged me to make it higher.”

Kayla was interested in interning with P2P because “I loved being a Girl Scout, and as a woman of color in STEM, I want to inspire other young girls to explore and find passion in STEM. I’m most excited about helping plan the upcoming STEM Festival and teach programs about STEM and art.

Kayla recently became the vice president of Women in STEM at her university and is excited to partner with middle schools and high schools in the area and also encourage students to join Girl Scouts!
